Living in Chester, VA can be a wonderful experience. To help keep it that way, it makes sense to try to use your time and effort to help others. When more people can see the best of what an area has to offer, then they too will want to pay it forward, and bring more opportunities to those in need. It can be hard to find the right place to start volunteering, which is why it is important to first consider what skills you can bring to the table, and how much time you have to spend. Then, take a look at the following volunteer opportunities and see which ones suit you best.

Help Veterans

It goes without saying that veterans have contributed so much to our country. These men and women have fought for our freedom, and have sacrificed a great deal in doing so. By joining Soldiers’ Angels, you can provide aid and comfort to veterans in their time of need. Whether you’re helping to coordinate activities in VA hospitals, or just checking up on veterans to ensure they are well-cared for, you can have a meaningful impact on their lives. There are many ways to get involved with this organization, so be sure to check their website for more information.

Become a Special Advocate

Children who have been victims of abuse or neglect need an adult they can trust. They also need someone who can advocate for their best interests as they move through the legal system. If you would like to help, you can become a court appointed special advocate, or CASA, with the National CASA Association. These adults talk with the child they represent, as well as medical professionals, foster parents, teachers, and other adults in their life to get a good sense of what that child needs. CASAs then stand up for those needs in courtrooms and other places where they need to be heard. It is not an easy position, but it can improve the lives of children and help you make a positive impact on the community.

Volunteer with a Support Group

We all experience grief at one point or another in our lives. It usually helps to have someone with an understanding ear, compassionate heart, and strong shoulder to lean on during these times. Those who find they need a little extra help may decide to join support groups like Full Circle, which is a place where you can volunteer. If you want to help out children who are experiencing grief, you can be an assistant to a professional counselor. In this position, you will aid in the facilitation of family activities as well as age-specific group exercises. This opportunity does require some training, but it’s a great way to help families overcome emotional obstacles.

As you can see, there are plenty of ways you can help your community by volunteering when living in Chester. This is just the tip of the iceberg, though. Do some digging on your own to find the perfect place for you.
